Drug dealer found with £57,000 of cocaine in car told police he was a key worker

A driver found with thousands of pounds of drugs in his car, claimed he was a key worker on his way home from a night shift, when he was stopped by police, as UK news report.

Benjamin Evans, who was wearing hi-visibility work clothes, was pulled over by officers during the coronavirus lockdown and tried to talk his way out of the traffic stop.

But a search of his vehicle revealed a package containing cocaine worth a street value of around £57,000.

Police said the possession of drugs with intent to supply “does not qualify as essential work” and have called the seizure and conviction an “excellent result” for the communities of the Swansea Valley where the defendant lives.

Speaking after the hearing, Dyfed-Powys Police detective inspector Steve Lloyd said the conviction was an “excellent result” for the communities of the Swansea Valley.

He said: “Trying to pass himself off as a key worker did not succeed. Possessing drugs with the intent to supply does not qualify as essential work.

“I hope this will serve as a warning to others who wish to bring drugs into the Powys area that it will not be tolerated. We want to let potential criminals know that it is business as usual and we will continue to pursue those who target some of the most vulnerable people in our communities.”
